The Marine Bureau is permanently staffed by more than 40 sworn police officers. An annual complement of police officers is temporarily assigned to the Marine Bureau from April 1 through November 1 each year. Any police officer seeking assignment to the Marine Bureau must first have completed three years of police service in the Department and should possess a marine related qualification. All candidates for assignment are interviewed by the supervisory staff and should have a satisfactory recommendation from their current commanding officer. Once assigned to the Marine Bureau, police officers must attend the Standard Marine Patrol Vessel Operator Curriculum (SMPVOC), Jet Propulsion Vessel Operator Curriculum (JPVOC), Safe Boat Vessel Operator Curriculum (SBVOC), and the Enhance Marine Law Enforcement Curriculum (MLE). Members may also participate in continuing operational and special marine enforcement related in-service training.
